I strongly oppose the proposed Beacon AI data center power generation project near Indus due to its significant strain on local resources and community impact. The facility’s anticipated high water consumption poses a serious risk to regional water security, especially in an area already vulnerable to drought conditions. Little oversight and transparency is being given to this project's proposed water use (1500 cubic meters) and impact on local groundwater levels and availability (again, in a closed watershed basin with mainly irrigated agriculture and is prone to drought).
Additionally, the massive electricity demand required to power AI operations could increase grid pressure, raise energy costs for residents, and undermine sustainability goals.
Beyond resource concerns, this project threatens the quality of life for the local community, introducing industrial-scale infrastructure that may disrupt rural character, increase noise, and potentially affect property values. The cumulative environmental footprint, which includes water depletion, energy overuse, and associated emissions, far outweighs any claimed benefits.
I urge decision-makers to slow down the planning process, pursue additional public and technical consultation, and prioritize responsible development that safeguards water, energy, and community well-being over speculative “AI-driven” projects. Natural resources are far more valuable and should be protected for the benefit of communities and ecosystems.
At a minimum, a different location for this project should be considered with more transparency of how water is sourced, used/consumed, and disposed or returned to the environment. It is very hard to see the long-term benefits to the province of Alberta and local communities.
